A-level School List in Japan【2024 Edition】
What are A-levels? Pathway to UK University
A-level stands for ‘General Certificate of Education Advanced Level’ and is an international qualification offered by Cambridge International, an educational institution affiliated with the University of Cambridge, UK.
Cambridge International is a programme that originated in the UK and is currently used in 10,000 schools in approximately 160 countries, with 170,000 students taking it every year. The International Baccalaureate (IB) is the most popular international curriculum in Japan, but Cambridge International is actually the most studied in the world.
In the UK, the curriculum studied in Year 12 – Year 13 (corresponding to Year 2 – Year 3 of high school), known as the Sixth Form, is recognised as a high school diploma and university entrance qualification.
In particular, if you want to enter a university in the UK, you cannot use your Japanese high school diploma, as there are no general education courses like in Japan. If you want to enter without going through a foundation course, you must have completed an international curriculum such as A-level or IB.
A-level (A-level) features
The biggest difference between A-level and Japanese high school courses is the choice of subjects: in the first year of the two-year course, there are four subjects, and in the second year, three subjects. On top of this, the subjects are fully elective.
The advantage is that you can only study subjects you are good at or like, but be aware that some university courses have specific subjects that you must take.
We often receive questions about how to choose A-level subjects. The best approach is to narrow down the course you want to enter at university and then choose subjects that align with the entry requirements.
For example, if you’re aiming for a medical course in the UK, Chemistry and Biology are essential subjects. For scientists, Mathematics is also fundamental. In this case, you would choose Chemistry, Biology, and Maths, and one more subject of your choice in the first year.
UK university entry from A-levels
Students taking A-levels apply to universities through an application portal called UCAS. a-levels are a two-year curriculum, but the final grade is determined by a standardised exam taken in May/June*.
*Students in certain schools might sit November exams.
For a better understanding of filing an application from UCAS, please watch this video for more information.
